SLOW START STALLS BEARS
The Broward Bears opened the 2012 FFA season with the ex-Champs, Treasure Coast Bobcats. The Bears defense started the night off with 3 penalties that helped move the Bobcats into scoring position but were able to tighten up and forced the Bobcats into a missed field goal. The offense appeared to limp out of the gate as the Bears opening drive ended with a pick 6 for the Bobcats 1st score. Then they were able to convert the 2 point play and took an early lead of 8 - 0 in the first. The Bears defense battled and kept the Bobcats out of the end zone for the remainder of the 1st quarter. With the Bears defense looking for ways to slow down the Bobcats high powered offense, rookie DB, Ryan Mattison, picked off LaSaun Davis at the goal line early in the 2nd quarter. Unfortunately, the Bobcats next score was set up by another miscue by the Bears offense on a controversial call where Bears QB, Brandon James, scrambled for a 1st down and appeared to be down by contact and then fumbled the ball. The Bobcats went on to mount an 18 - 0 lead before the Bears offense begin to click and get things rolling. The Bears were able to move the ball the entire game but consistently kept shooting themselves in the foot with dropped passed that turned into turnovers, missed opportunities, and miscommunication. The Bears found their stride and were able to put up 14 unanswered points before the Bobcats added another score to put things out of reach for the Bears. The Bears first score came on a brilliant throw-and-catch from James to RB, Jayme Thomas for a 29 yard score, with RB, Calvin "Bradshaw" Buchanan running in the 2-point conversion. The Bears final score came on a exciting 26 yard scramble by Brandon James. "If we are going to be GREAT, we can't have turnovers...PERIOD," says James!!!
The Bears hit the road this week to take on the Palm Beach Makos at Palm Beach Central on Saturday, January 28 @ 7pm. This should be a nice test to see if the Bears have learned from their mistakes and are ready to try and slow down another high powered offense, and score on a tough defense. Come support the Bears as they look get their first win of the season.

BEARS SINK MARINERS
The Broward County Bears took on the Palm Beach Mariners in their 2nd Annual Tyler McLellan Foundation Charity Game last Saturday, January 14th. The Bears offense struggled before settling into their groove and putting up 45 points on the Mariners. "We had four fumbles in the 1st quarter, which would normally be a death sentence for any team but we were able to overcome those early miscues and find some balance running and throwing the ball. We can't afford to dig ourselves into holes like that and expect to win every time," said Bears Owner, Chris Salter. The Bears' defense looked stellar as they smothered any opportunities the Mariners had the entire game. Even in quick change situations, the Bears' defense was able to keep the Mariners from putting together any momentum and kept them out of the end zone for their 2nd, shutout victory of the pre-season. "We had our backs against the wall a couple times but ended up winning the battle to maintain our GOOSE EGG! Our ability to adjust on the fly and comprehend what they were trying to do helped our tenacious defense make the necessary stops our team needed. We still have a lot of work to do this coming season," said Bears linebacker, Tido Labossiere.
The Bears are preparing to take on their first FFA opponents, the Treasure Coast Bobcats, at home on January 21st @ 7pm. "We are looking forward to making strides as a team this season. Hopefully having everybody back, which we haven't had in the past couple seasons, and healthy this year will prove to be the missing ingredient to a great season," said Bears Co-Owner, Gideon Salter. Come out, bring the family, enjoy some high quality football entertainment and support the Bears this Saturday!
